Light Throw Test in High Speed Sync(HSS):
Indoor studio, with the Nikon D7000 on a tripod. Qflash on a lightstand using a wireless trigger. Also the Nikon SB-700 on a lightstand using a wireless trigger. They’re both are set 12 feet from the subject, both set on Manual and full power(1/1). Camera setting were for Sports HSS, shutter 1/1000. F4 fstop, ISO 100. Camera Zoom in at 75mm, this is were I think the Nikon SB-700 kick butt. The SB-700 flash also zoom with the lens causing it to throw more light down the hall vs the Qflash fixed/non-zoom head.
Conclusion:
For a regular studio use, the Qflash is very useful with very fast recycle times. But when it comes to sport photographer, you want the most light throw you can get during high speed sync to over power the sun. According to Qflash guide number: 110′ vs Nikon SB-700 guide number 92′, the Qflash should win, but it fell short.
The Qflash is Heavy, overpriced and underpowered! I cannot recommend this product to anyone, maybe 10 years ago I would’ve been impress.
The SB-700 is cheaper and lighter, therefore more portable. If you need more power just buy two more and than gang them up by using the Triple Hotshoe Mount Flash Bracket 3-Way and its still cheaper than the Qflash with the battery pack!
